About
Battle Abbey combines the landscape of the Battle of Hastings with the monastery William the Conqueror founded after his victory. Interactive displays and a film introduce the conflict before an audio tour helps explain where the Norman and English armies fought. The battlefield route passes wooden figures, while the abbey ruins reveal a very different chapter in the site's history. Climb the gatehouse for rooftop views and explore the exhibition inside, or pause in the walled garden. Reviewers particularly value the range of activities for children, including the playground and spaces to explore around the ruins. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the site. Begin at the visitor centre to give the battlefield its context, and allow for rough ground, slopes and steps; the lower terrace offers an alternative view for visitors who cannot manage the battlefield terrain.

Daily 10am-5pm until 24 October, then 10am-4pm through 1 November. Mainly weekends in winter, with holiday exceptions.
Last entry normally one hour before closing. The Battle of Hastings re-enactment on 10-11 October 2026 has separate event booking and may differ from standard admission.
Standard admission is free for English Heritage members. National Trust membership alone does not grant free entry. Parking and special events are separate.
Accessibility: Gravel and grass paths with steep gradients, rough battlefield ground and steps into ruins. Wheelchair users should ring at the gatehouse. A visitor-centre lift and mobility-scooter loans are available; enquire ahead.
