Chartwell was Winston Churchill's home for more than 40 years from 1922, chosen for its views across the Weald of Kent, and the house is kept as the family knew it, with maps, gifts from world leaders and personal belongings in every room. Down the hillside, the studio holds the largest single collection of his paintings, with his paints still laid out beside an unfinished canvas. Lady Churchill's rose garden, the walled kitchen garden whose brick walls Churchill laid himself, lakes with black swans, and woodland play areas with a two-storey treehouse fill the 80 acres, and dogs on short leads are welcome in the garden and woods. Reviewers rate the room guides above everything, full of family stories you would never get from a self-guided walk through. Tips from visitors: the house needs a timed ticket from the visitor centre, so pick that up first; the site is steep with steps, and a volunteer-run mobility taxi runs from the car park; and the car park fills in school holidays.

You do not need to pre-book to visit Chartwell. Tickets are available on the day from the Visitor Centre. National Trust members can visit for free. Parking is £6 per car. £10 per minibus or coach. Please pay in the Visitor Centre if machines are out of service. National Trust UK members can park for free by scanning their membership card at the machines,in the Visitor Centre or adding it in the JustPark app and checking in. Chartwell's JustPark code is 80538 . Child Tickets: Please note that child tickets are for those aged between 5 and 17 years. Under 5s can visit for free.

1.4 miles (2.24km), moderate, about 45 minutes, in eleven stages over some rough terrain and steep slopes. Starts at the Chartwell car park entrance, TN16 1PS, grid reference TQ454513, then heads west across Mapleton Road and up steps, so it uses the Chartwell car park but does not need garden or house admission.

5 miles (8km), moderate, about 3 hours, in twelve stages over gentle slopes and occasional uneven terrain, with slopes and steps throughout. Starts at Chartwell, grid reference TQ454513, from beside the cafe, leaving by the main car park gate and crossing Hosey Common Lane onto the bridleway opposite.

2 miles (3.2km), moderate, about 1 hour, in fourteen stages, moderately challenging with several hills, uneven paths and gated access to some fields. Starts at the Winston Churchill bronze statue on The Green in Westerham, grid reference TQ447540, so no Chartwell admission or parking is needed to begin. The page warns that the route crosses busy roads at several points.

4 miles (6.4km), moderate, about 2 hours, in thirteen stages with some steep slopes. Starts at Hosey Common car park, Westerham TN16 1PL, grid reference TQ450530, which the Trust states is outside its care, so parking there is at your own risk. No Chartwell admission is needed to walk the route.
