Chedworth Roman Villa is one of the largest Roman villas yet found in Britain, lost under Cotswold woodland near Yanworth for more than 1,500 years until it was uncovered in 1864. In-situ mosaics, two bath-house suites, hypocaust heating and a water shrine survive from a house that grew from a modest homestead into a lavish 4th-century residence, and digging continues, with a mosaic dated to the 5th century among the finds. A modern conservation building gives close views of the mosaic floors, the Victorian lodge at the centre of the site holds a small museum of tools, bracelets and hair pins, and picnic tables look down the wooded valley.
