Crickley Hill is a prominent spur of the Cotswold escarpment above the Severn Vale, jointly owned by the National Trust and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. People have been active here since around 4,000 BC, and the hilltop holds an Iron Age hillfort and the site of one of the first battles in England. The limestone grassland is extremely rich in plants and butterflies and is grazed by a conservation herd of Belted Galloway cattle, while behind the cafe lies the Scrubbs, a beech wood planted in the 18th century and now a Site of Special Scientific Interest. On clear days the views reach Robinswood Hill and May Hill, with the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountain beyond. Reviewers single out those views and the mix of short, fairly level paths and longer hill walks, and rate the cafe run by the wildlife trust. Everyone pays to park, members included. Dogs are welcome, on leads in marked areas from March to July.
The countryside is open 06:00 to 21:00 until the end of September, 06:00 to 19:00 in October and 06:00 to 18:00 from November.
The cafe, visitor centre and toilets belong to Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust; the toilets are open 9am to 6pm.
Open countryside, free for everyone. Parking is charged to all visitors by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust.
Wildlife trust car parks; everyone pays, members included. Not a Trust car park, so membership does not cover it.
The car parks belong to Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and everyone, National Trust members included, pays £2.50 for the day, 24 hours a day, every day. Pay by cash, card, phone or the RingGo app (car park ID 4852), up to midnight on the day of the visit. A £100 charge applies to unauthorised vehicles; enter the registration correctly. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust sells parking permits for regular visitors.
Reviewers describe a small upper car park by the cafe and a larger lower one nearby; the pin is the main car park listing off the A417 on the Cotswold Way. Satnav GL4 8JY.
