Lodge Park is England's only surviving 17th-century grandstand, built by John 'Crump' Dutton to indulge his passions for deer coursing, gambling, banqueting and entertaining. It became the National Trust's first restoration project in 1998, returned to its former glory on archaeological evidence, and the 18th-century landscape laid out around it by Charles Bridgeman is being restored too. The grandstand opens only on selected days, when a pop-up coffee van, lawn games, dressing up and a free family trail fill the front lawn; the rest of the year the draw is the working Sherborne Park Estate two and a half miles away across the A40, with fallow and roe deer, badgers, water meadows home to otters and water voles, and walks from the Ewe Pen Barn car park. Dogs must be on leads around the estate and in the Bridgeman landscape, with only assistance dogs inside the grandstand. The Trust's 2.5-mile family walk loops through farmland, woodland and Sherborne village. Reviewers say the roof is the highlight, with views across the Cotswolds, so ask for a roof pass. One tip: a ramp serves the ground floor but only stairs go above, and the water meadows flood after heavy rain.
Prices, non-members
Please note that admission to Lodge Park is by card only, we cannot accept cash payments. For Sherborne Park Estate car parks, members can park for free by scanning their National Trust membership cards at the pay and display machine. Parking charges apply for non-members as follows: £1.50 for up to one hour; £4 for all day.
Last entry to Lodge Park grandstand and Bridgeman landscape 3.30pm. Car park closes at 4pm.
