Cissbury Ring, on a chalk promontory above Worthing, is the largest hillfort in Sussex and the second largest Iron Age hillfort in southern England, its ditch and ramparts enclosing about sixty-five acres on a hill first worked by Neolithic flint miners over 5,000 years ago. Centuries of grazing have made it one of the best butterfly sites in Sussex, home to the round-headed rampion, and migrating birds make landfall here in spring and autumn. Two waymarked trails circle the ramparts, with views on a clear day to the cliffs beyond Brighton and the Isle of Wight. Reviewers love the wide views, the quiet paths and the ponies and sheep grazing among the earthworks. Tips from visitors: there is no National Trust car park; use the free Storrington Rise car park and allow a 20-minute uphill walk through kissing gates and stiles, take litter home as there are no toilets or facilities, and keep dogs on leads near the grazing animals.

Tip: I have always loved Cissbury ring, so many different routes you can do, easy routes or tougher routes. I have run up, biked up there or just walked. Beautiful scenery at the top where you can see all the different towns. Never get bored of it.
