Bramber Castle crowns a natural knoll above the River Adur, where its Norman founders could defend a route through the South Downs. Built after the Conquest, it became the Sussex stronghold of the de Braose family. A surviving tower wall, around 14 metres high, gives an impression of the castle's former size, while the surrounding earthworks help explain its defensive position. The visit is as much about the grassy setting and views as the remaining masonry, and reviewers often enjoy a picnic or a pause beside the ruins. Dogs are welcome on leads. Approach with care: the unpaved access track can become deeply uneven, rutted and muddy, and may be unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles. Visitors with limited mobility should also consider the rough approach, with village parking offering an alternative starting point for those able to walk uphill.
