Clun Castle's ruined keep stands on the side of a rocky mound above the river, an unusual position that makes its surviving walls particularly striking. The castle was founded soon after the Norman Conquest as part of the defences along the Welsh border. Both castle and settlement prospered before attacks by followers of Owain Glyn Dwr devastated the surrounding area in the early 15th century. Extensive earthworks still show how the stronghold occupied the landscape, and reviewers particularly enjoy the views over Clun and the valley. The village provides places to eat after exploring the ruins. Dogs should remain on leads, with English Heritage warning of poisonous plants around the site and river.
