Stokesay Castle is a lightly defended medieval mansion whose construction was complete by 1291, with a great hall, towers and a timber-framed gatehouse gathered beside the parish church. Its survival makes it an unusually direct glimpse of domestic life in the Welsh border country, rather than simply a collection of defensive ruins. Explore the hall and carved interiors, listen to the audio tour and follow the moat walk around the outside. Families can try a puzzle quest inspired by local giants, and the play area near the tearoom takes its cues from the castle's towers and gatehouse. Reviewers praise the audio guide and the setting, often combining their visit with a pause at the neighbouring church or cafe. Check current conservation notices before travelling, as individual rooms can close. Uneven steps and historic staircases limit mobility access; dogs on leads may visit the grounds and tearoom but cannot enter the castle.

Opening time details

Conservation work closes the South Tower and Solar on 7-11 and 14-16 September 2026. Both are scheduled to open on 12-13 September; the rest of the site remains open. Recheck individual-room access before travelling.

Open daily 10am-5pm until 24 October 2026, then 10am-4pm from 25 October to 1 November. From 2 November-20 December 2026, open Saturday, Sunday 10am-4pm. Check the official calendar for holidays, later dates and event exceptions.

Last entry normally 30 minutes before closing.

EH members receive free standard admission with their membership card. National Trust membership alone does not cover admission. Advance booking is optional for ordinary admission; check special events separately.

Limited wheelchair access with many uneven steps, no ramps or lifts; motorised scooters cannot access the castle. Manual wheelchair users are advised to bring assistance. Two steps through the historic gate into the courtyard. The new play area has accessible surfaces, ramps and inclusive equipment.

Parking: Grass-field parking about 300m from the entrance. Free for EH members displaying a valid car sticker; non-members pay. Current tariff not confirmed. Arrange accessible drop-off close to the entrance by telephone.
