Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle

Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle stands on the open moorland of Stapeley Hill near the Welsh border. Fifteen stones remain visible from a Bronze Age circle that once contained around thirty, and the exposed setting helps explain why this place gathered so many local legends. Looking between the stones towards the surrounding hills is as much part of the visit as examining the monument itself. The official approach follows a track north-east from the parking area over the brow of the hill, with vehicles prohibited beyond the cattle grid. Visitors appreciate the views but warn that the narrow approach lanes and wet ground deserve more preparation than the short distance might suggest. Bring suitable footwear and a weatherproof layer for the moorland conditions. Keep dogs on leads because livestock may graze near the stones.
