St Augustine's Conduit House reveals the practical engineering behind monastic life in medieval Canterbury. Built in the mid-twelfth century above St Augustine's Abbey, it gathered spring water in a roughly octagonal masonry tank before sending it downhill through a lead pipe. The surviving flint and chalk walls and openings into the collecting tunnels make this a small but distinctive companion to the better-known abbey. A later roof collapsed in 1988, leaving the waterworks open to view. Reviewers tend to recommend combining it with other historic sights nearby, rather than making a separate journey just for this modest ruin. English Heritage directs visitors from King's Park, a short walk from the abbey; the final approach crosses grass on a steep slope. Use Longport's public car park and continue on foot. Dogs on leads are welcome.
