Western Heights, Dover

Dover's Western Heights form an extensive defensive landscape above the port, with the Drop Redoubt and surrounding ditches revealing the scale of the town's military protection. Much of the interest lies outside: the earthworks, masonry and views across Dover make the heights rewarding even when the fort interior is closed. Reviewers who join the volunteer-led tours particularly value the guides' explanations, while others stress the importance of checking which parts are actually open. Public footpaths allow views of the Drop Redoubt exterior during daylight hours. Interior visits run on selected dates, and special open weekends have their own arrangements; the Grand Shaft is separately cared for by Dover City Council. The terrain is steep and uneven, with steps inside the fort, so it is unsuitable for some visitors with limited mobility. Dogs must stay on leads where the paths cross cattle-grazed land.
