Deal Castle was built for Henry VIII as part of a new chain of coastal artillery defences in 1539, its rounded bastions designed for guns rather than medieval archers. Exhibits explain the threatened invasion that prompted the fort, with a large illustrated map placing the king and his European opponents in context. Explore the courtyard and keep, then descend into the dark, winding Rounds passage beneath the outer defences. Children can borrow wooden muskets and discover wind-up audio posts along the way. Upstairs, the Captains of Deal displays trace the people who later lived and worked here. Reviewers recommend allowing more time than the compact exterior suggests, particularly for the lower passages and sea views from the battlements. Expect uneven surfaces, narrow stairs and limited wheelchair access. Pet dogs are not admitted, and the adjacent car park has a three-hour limit.

Open daily 10am-5pm until 24 October, then 10am-4pm from 25 October to 1 November. Weekends 10am-4pm from 2 November to 20 December. Check the official calendar for holiday and event exceptions.
