Deal Castle was built for Henry VIII as part of a new chain of coastal artillery defences in 1539, its rounded bastions designed for guns rather than medieval archers. Exhibits explain the threatened invasion that prompted the fort, with a large illustrated map placing the king and his European opponents in context. Explore the courtyard and keep, then descend into the dark, winding Rounds passage beneath the outer defences. Children can borrow wooden muskets and discover wind-up audio posts along the way. Upstairs, the Captains of Deal displays trace the people who later lived and worked here. A seafront path runs south from the castle to Walmer Castle, a short coastal walk. Reviewers recommend allowing more time than the compact exterior suggests, particularly for the lower passages and sea views from the battlements. Expect uneven surfaces, narrow stairs and limited wheelchair access. The adjacent car park has a three-hour limit.

Dog access not confirmed
Start beside Deal Castle on the seafront and follow the coastal path south towards Walmer. Castle admissions are separate; Deal car park is charged and has a three-hour limit. The route page does not confirm current dog restrictions on the promenade or adjacent beaches.
