Cregennan is a quiet corner of the Trust's land in south Eryri (Snowdonia) near Arthog, where two lakes, Llynnau Cregennen, shelter below the rocky ridge of Pared y Cefn Hir. The larger lake covers 11 hectares and holds a small island, the smaller one five, and both are home to trout. The landscape carries 4,000 years of human activity, and two sheep and cattle farms still work the heath, dotted with drystone enclosures where livestock once sheltered. The site is an SSSI, with mossy saxifrage and fen bedstraw, and an important place for studying early Ordovician volcanic rocks; climbing Pared y Cefn Hir brings wide views. Reviewers single out the peace, the path around the lake and the views down to Barmouth and its bridge across the estuary. Dogs are welcome on leads, with livestock and wildlife to keep in mind. One tip from visitors: the road up is single track with passing places and gates, so be ready to reverse.
The countryside is open dawn to dusk on NT's calendar.
Toilets are at the Cregennan car park.
