The National Trust cares for land along the Cuckmere Valley as the river winds through the South Downs to the sea, mixing flower-rich chalk grassland, farmland and salt marsh with views of the Seven Sisters. Cradle Valley is a fine example of species-rich chalk grassland, drawing rare butterflies and wild flowers in summer, while wildfowl gather here over winter. At High and Over the river has carved a dramatic cliff from the soft chalk, where a white horse was cut into the scarp in 1836. Chyngton Farm was ploughed for food in the Second World War, and anti-tank traps, pill boxes and bunkers are still visible on the way to Cuckmere Haven. Reviewers single out the views, with the river snaking seawards and the Seven Sisters on the skyline. Two National Trust trails start from free car parks at High and Over and South Hill Barn in Seaford. The nearest toilets are at the Seven Sisters car park. Dogs are welcome, on leads where signs indicate.
The National Trust publishes no opening calendar for this open countryside.
