Pevensey Castle layers a medieval stronghold inside the walls of a Roman coastal fortress begun around AD 290. William the Conqueror landed here in 1066, and the site returned to military service in 1940 when machine-gun positions were concealed within its ancient masonry. Explore the surviving Roman circuit and the castle ruins, then use the displays and recreated commander's office to trace stories of sieges, prisoners and wartime soldiers. Children can try the castle code trail, peer into a dungeon and investigate a medieval basement room. Reviewers particularly recommend the audio guide for connecting these different periods, and appreciate the open grass around the ruins. Bring a picnic if you want a longer pause. Public parking and toilets are nearby, with a walk to the entrance; gravel and rough grass can require assistance for wheelchair users, and tower access involves steep stairs. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout.

Open daily 10am-5pm until 24 October 2026, then 10am-4pm from 25 October to 1 November. Closed 2 November-20 December 2026. Check the official calendar for holidays, later dates and event exceptions.

EH members receive free standard admission with their membership card. National Trust membership alone does not cover admission. Advance booking is optional for ordinary admission; check special events separately.
Inner and outer baileys use compacted gravel and rough grass; wheelchair users may need assistance. Level access to the lower North Tower exhibition. Upper tower viewing requires steep stairs. Public toilets are near the car park; accessible parking is approximately 300m from admissions.
Parking: Public pay-and-display car park around 300m from admissions, not managed by EH. Some free street parking in Westham and Pevensey is also described by EH; obey local restrictions. Current car park tariff not confirmed and EH membership does not cover it.
