Pevensey Castle layers a medieval stronghold inside the walls of a Roman coastal fortress begun around AD 290. William the Conqueror landed here in 1066, and the site returned to military service in 1940 when machine-gun positions were concealed within its ancient masonry. Explore the surviving Roman circuit and the castle ruins, then use the displays and recreated commander's office to trace stories of sieges, prisoners and wartime soldiers. Children can try the castle code trail, peer into a dungeon and investigate a medieval basement room. Reviewers particularly recommend the audio guide for connecting these different periods, and appreciate the open grass around the ruins. Bring a picnic if you want a longer pause. Public parking and toilets are nearby, with a walk to the entrance; gravel and rough grass can require assistance for wheelchair users, and tower access involves steep stairs. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout.
