The Grove Museum, Thie Tashtee Yn Chell, is a Victorian country house outside Ramsey, cared for by Manx National Heritage. Duncan Gibb, a Liverpool shipping merchant, bought the cottage of Poplar Grove in 1838 as a summer retreat and enlarged it into a house with gardens and farmland. His granddaughters Alice and Janet arrived in 1887 and lived here for nearly a century, leaving the house virtually unchanged until it was bought with its contents, gardens and land in 1976. See the formal rooms with the Broadwood grand piano and Duncan's writing desk, the Victorian shower in the carriage shed, the servants' bells in the kitchen, the horse-drawn threshing mill, the duck pond and the Loaghtan sheep in the fields. Reviewers single out the guides, who walk visitors through each room with the family's stories, and describe a house frozen in time with a melancholy edge. Tips from visitors: allow time for the guided tour, try the Victorian games, and buy Grove honey in the shop.
2026 season Friday 27 March to Sunday 1 November 2026, open Saturday to Wednesday 12pm to 4pm, last entry 3.30pm; closed Thursdays and Fridays. Closed over the winter (guided group tours on request); check the MNH website for the 2027 season.
Children aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Some special events carry an additional charge. Drones are not permitted. The road outside was resurfaced on 27 June and 4 July 2026; footpaths stayed open.
Access: one 18 cm step into the ticket office (induction loop, small shop); 100 m of loose gravel to the house, which has four steps with a handrail at the front door or a cobbled path and one 19 cm step at the kitchen door; the first floor is up 11 steps with no alternative. Grounds on gravel, grass and cobbles, where wheelchair users may need assistance and motorised scooters are permitted. Toilets with level entrance behind the ticket office but no accessible cubicle (nearest at Mooragh Park, Market Square and Ramsey Town Hall). A talking bench in the grounds plays recordings of Janet Gibb. Picnics encouraged; the conservatory occasionally serves hot drinks and cakes. A large fenced pond stands near the ticket office.
