Ham House stands on the south bank of the Thames between Richmond and Kingston, built in 1610 and enlarged in the 1670s by the Duke and Duchess of Lauderdale, and it survives as one of the most complete 17th-century houses in Europe, with its original furniture, textiles and lacquered cabinets still in place. The Great Staircase, Green Closet and Long Gallery lead the house, while the restored garden holds the lavender-filled Cherry Garden, the Wilderness and a kitchen garden supplying the Orangery Cafe. Dogs on short leads are welcome in the garden, shop and cafe but not the house. The Trust's riverside walks follow the Thames Path to Ham from Richmond and Kingston stations. Reviewers praise the volunteers, the below-stairs rooms that show how the household ran, and a library of 400-year-old books. Tips from visitors: there is no visitor car park, so use the free council-run Ham Street Car Park by the river; house entry is by timed slots handed out at reception on the day, so arrive early; and in summer Hammerton's Ferry brings walkers across from the Twickenham towpath.

Free entry for National Trust members. Under 5s free. A valid membership card or entry ticket is required for entry. We do not operate a pre-booking sys tem; please go to Visitor Reception (at the main, river-facing gates) on arrival to gain entry. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing and last orders are 10 minutes before the coffee shop closes.

Starts at Ham House and Garden, grid reference TQ172731, and follows the Thames Path towards Richmond, passing Hammerton's Ferry and turning down River Lane beside Petersham Meadows. No admission charge is stated for the route itself, which runs on public riverside paths outside the paying garden.

Starts at Richmond Station, grid reference TQ180751, reached by train or by bus routes including the 65, 190, 371, 391, 419 and 490. Paved and gravel surfaces, mostly level apart from one steep climb. Free parking 400 yards away in the Riverside car park at the end of Ham Street, which is not National Trust.
