House & GardenLondonEnglish Heritage4.6
Chiswick House is the villa the 3rd Earl of Burlington designed for himself between 1726 and 1729, drawing on Palladio's drawings and his Grand Tours of Italy to create one of England's earliest neo-Palladian buildings. Run by the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust for English Heritage, the house is ticketed, while the gardens, often called the birthplace of the English landscape garden, are free every day. Inside, William Kent's painted ceilings crown the Blue and Red Velvet Rooms among Old Master paintings; outside, look for the cascade, the Ionic Temple, the Italian Garden and a conservatory holding Britain's oldest camellia collection. Reviewers love the sweeping lawns, lake and old trees, which feel peaceful despite busy West London, and families head for the playground by the cafe. Dogs can run in the gardens but must follow the short-lead and no-dog zones and stay out of the house. One tip from visitors: the council car park off the A4 is small and fills early.
