Carlyle's House

Carlyle's House is an elegant Queen Anne terraced house in Chelsea where the Scottish historian and essayist Thomas Carlyle and his wife Jane lived from 1834 until their deaths. The house is preserved much as the Carlyles knew it, with their books, furniture and personal possessions offering an intimate picture of Victorian literary life. Famous visitors included Charles Dickens, John Ruskin, Alfred Tennyson and Charles Darwin. The small walled garden provides a quiet refuge from the bustle of Chelsea.
