The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
Historic Scotland names no parking. Reviewers drive down the narrow road beside the buildings of the clachan to the car park of Kilmodan Church, on the left as you approach, and walk across the churchyard to the stones; no official charge or free statement exists, so the status is recorded as unknown.
Driving pin: Kilmodan Church car park, 100 m east of Historic Scotland's own pin on the stones. Clachan of Glendaruel is 8 miles north of Colintraive off the A886. Historic Scotland gives journey planners only.
At Clachan of Glendaruel, in the quiet valley of the River Ruel in Cowal, a small white building at the back of Kilmodan churchyard shelters a collection of carved grave slabs gathered from the graveyard around St Modan's Church. There are nine late-medieval West Highland slabs and one dated 1636, nearly all in the style common to mid-Argyll, Lorn and Cowal. Their carvings include interlace and twining plant stems, swords and tools, among them what look like a blacksmith's tongs, a deer hunt, a unicorn, animals fighting with axes and spears, and human figures. The 1636 slab commemorates Donald McCloy, minister here for forty years, who resigned in old age as English-speaking Lowlanders moved into the parish. An eleventh stone, once taken for the head of a medieval cross, is now thought to be a pillar worn into shape as a tethering post. The stones are seen through a gated doorway, and the churchyard has many fine later gravestones. Drive down the narrow lane to the church car park.
Historic Scotland: 'Kilmodan Sculptured Stones are free to visit and is open year-round.' No hours, closures or notices on 21 October 2026; not on Historic Scotland's closures page.
The stones stand in a small white building, the lapidarium, in the churchyard of Kilmodan Church, behind a gated doorway through which they can be seen and photographed; a guide inside explains them. Strong footwear is recommended. The church beside it is Kilmodan Church of the Church of Scotland. No toilets or other facilities.
