Kingswood Abbey Gatehouse

Kingswood Abbey Gatehouse is the principal survivor of a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century and closed during the Dissolution in 1538. The two-storey entrance dates from the late medieval period, with a large central arch, a separate pedestrian passage and carved stone decoration above. Look closely at the richly detailed window and surviving religious sculpture, which make this a rewarding building to examine from the village street. The rest of the abbey has disappeared, so the visit centres on this small but elaborate gateway. Reviewers warn that interior access is limited and that parking can be difficult nearby. English Heritage currently lists key collection from the community cafe at the Lower Schoolroom on selected days; confirm the arrangement before travelling if you want to go inside. Dogs are welcome on leads.
