Haresfield Beacon and Standish Wood occupy three spurs of the Cotswold escarpment a few miles north-west of Stroud, and from the exposed promontory hill fort on the beacon the view runs across the Severn estuary to the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons. The National Trust estate mixes open grassland with beech and yew woodland: bluebells carpet Standish Wood in spring, veteran beeches more than 200 years old stand in Shortwood, and the limestone turf carries orchids and butterflies, while buzzards and kestrels hunt over the fort. Long and round barrows and a cross dyke take the archaeology back more than 3,000 years. The Cotswold Way National Trail crosses the whole estate, and the Trust's 1-mile Randwick Wood circular walk passes an ancient burial mound from the Randwick Woods car park. Dogs are welcome on leads throughout. Reviewers come for the views and the coffee Land Rover, not run by the Trust, that visits on set days with cakes. Tips from visitors: the ground is steep and uneven in places and the top is exposed on a windy day, and the small pay-and-display car park has a narrow entrance, free for members.
