Uley Long Barrow, known locally as Hetty Pegler's Tump after Hester Pegler who owned the land in the 17th century, is a Neolithic chambered burial mound at least 5,000 years old, set high above the Severn Valley. The mound is 37 metres long and of the transepted type, with a central passage leading to an end chamber and two side chambers on the south side; one of the northern chambers was destroyed in 1821 by workmen seeking stone. Between 15 and 20 skeletons have been found here, and Roman coins show it was opened long before Dr John Thurnham excavated and rebuilt much of it in 1854. Reviewers enjoy stooping through the low entrance into the chambers, and English Heritage advises bringing a torch to explore the interior. Dogs on leads are welcome. One tip from visitors: park in the small free layby on the B4066 and cross carefully to the signed field path.
