Nympsfield Long Barrow

Nympsfield Long Barrow stands on the Cotswold escarpment at Coaley Peak, where a Neolithic burial monument shares its setting with broad views across the Severn Valley. Excavations uncovered human remains and pottery, while the removal of the roof has left the stone passage and burial chambers open to view. This makes the arrangement of the tomb unusually easy to understand without entering a dark chamber. Upright limestone slabs and the low mound mark out a communal burial place used by some of the area's earliest farming communities. Visitors particularly value the outlook and picnic tables, often combining a short look at the archaeology with a longer pause on the hillside. Use the adjacent viewpoint parking and check its height restriction if travelling in a tall vehicle. The Cotswold Way leads towards Uley Long Barrow, about a mile away. Dogs are welcome on leads.
