North Leigh Roman Villa occupies a riverside landscape in the Evenlode valley, where a large Roman estate once supported an exceptionally comfortable household. At its early fourth-century height the villa had three bath suites, at least nineteen mosaic floors and eleven rooms with underfloor heating. Two ranges of the courtyard buildings can still be traced among the surviving walls, while an important geometric mosaic is protected inside a separate building. The mosaic is normally covered and only shown on special volunteer-led opening days, so do not assume it will be visible on an ordinary visit. Reviewers recommend sturdy shoes for the farm-track approach and leaving energy for the uphill return to the roadside parking. There are no facilities on site. Dogs on leads may visit the open-air ruins but are not admitted to the Mosaic House.
Uneven farm-track approach may be unsuitable for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Five steps lead to the mosaic building. The mosaic is covered except during special volunteer openings.
Any reasonable daylight hours, there is no internal access to the mosaic building except on specific open days and events. This years open days are between 11am & 5pm on the following dates- 30th &31st May, 27th & 28th June, 25th & 26th July, 8th & 9th August, 22nd & 23rd August and 19th & 20th September. In addition to this we will be cleaning the Mosaic on the 9th April ( 10.30am until 4pm) during this time the Mosaic will be viewable and our volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions.
