Museum galleries free to everyone. Rooftop access is extra: adult £2.00, child £1.00 (ages 6 and over, with an adult), English Heritage members £1.00; the roof may close at short notice in poor weather.
Arrive on foot, by bike or by public transport.
No on-site car park. Public car parks and on-street parking are in the town centre, about 90m from the museum; two hours' free parking is available in some town centre car parks.
Driving arrival: the County Hall in Market Place; park in a town centre car park and walk.
Abingdon County Hall has dominated the Market Place since it was built between 1678 and 1682, when the town was competing with Reading to be Berkshire's county town. It may have been designed by Sir Christopher Wren, and was certainly built by two men he worked with closely, the mason Christopher Kempster and John Scarborough. Giant Corinthian pilasters rise through both storeys of its limestone walls, and the old courtroom sits on arches above an open market space. Abingdon on Thames Town Council runs it as the town museum. Reviewers single out the friendly, knowledgeable volunteers, the displays on the town's MG car factory, including the last MGB roadster made, and the views over the town from the rooftop, which carries a small extra charge. They also enjoy the tradition of throwing buns from the roof to crowds on royal occasions. There are over 120 steps and no lift to the galleries or roof, and no car park, so use the town centre car parks nearby.
The museum is open 10am-4pm, Tuesdays to Sundays, throughout the year. The site is also open on bank holidays, except over Christmas and New Year.
