Northey Island

Northey Island is the oldest recorded battlefield in England, where the Battle of Maldon was fought against Viking raiders in 991 AD. The tidal island in the Blackwater Estuary is accessible by causeway at low tide and is a haven for overwintering wildfowl and wading birds.
