Okehampton Castle

Okehampton Castle stretches along a wooded ridge above the West Okement river, with ruins rising from the gatehouse towards the keep mound. Hugh Courtenay transformed the castle into a grand residence during the 14th century, and its surviving buildings still suggest the scale of that household. After its last owner fell foul of Henry VIII, the abandoned castle became a subject for Turner and other painters drawn to dramatic ruins. Visitors particularly enjoy the elevated views and the surrounding greenery. Woodland walks and a riverside picnic area extend the visit beyond the castle walls. Dogs are welcome on leads. Expect steps from the entrance and a further steep climb to the keep, with uneven ground throughout. The car park is reached along a lane without a pavement, and opening depends on volunteer availability.
