Penhallam Manor

Penhallam Manor preserves the low foundations of a moated medieval house built by the de Cardinham family, with its main construction attributed to Andrew de Cardinham in the 13th century. Abandonment in the following century left a complete ground plan without the later rebuilding that altered many comparable houses. Today the grass-covered walls, moat and interpretation boards suggest the scale of a once substantial household in a wooded Cornish setting. Visitors particularly enjoy the quiet approach, although recent accounts also describe the closed moat bridge. The bridge closure currently limits the visit to exterior viewing, so the rooms within the ruined manor cannot be entered. A half-mile track connects the small car park with the site; wear footwear suitable for mud and check current closure notices before travelling. Dogs are welcome on leads.
