Roche Abbey's tall church transepts rise above a compact Cistercian monastery in a valley edged by limestone outcrops. Their early Gothic arches became a focal point in the Georgian landscape laid out by Capability Brown, turning medieval remains into part of a designed view. Later work exposed much of the abbey's ground plan, so the low foundations and surviving walls can be read together. Look for the gatehouse remains and the lay brothers' infirmary as well as the church. Reviewers frequently mention the stream, quiet setting and narrow approach road. Dogs on leads are welcome. The small car park is a short distance from the ruins along a rough path; wheelchair users can use a side gate to avoid the entrance steps. Bring any refreshments you need, as there are no toilets on site.
