Monk Bretton Priory brings a medieval monastic landscape to the edge of modern Barnsley. Founded in the twelfth century as a Cluniac monastery, it survives as a clearly traceable ground plan, substantial standing walls and a fifteenth-century gatehouse. The almost complete west range gives the ruins more height and shape than a scatter of foundations, while the spaces between buildings help visitors picture the scale of the community.
