Scotney Castle

Scotney Castle pairs two houses in one wooded Kent valley: a moated 14th-century castle built by Roger Ashburnham, and the Victorian mansion Edward Hussey III commissioned from Anthony Salvin in the 1830s, leaving the old castle below as a romantic ruin at the heart of a Picturesque garden. The mansion is shown much as the Hussey family left it, and reviewers say it feels lived in rather than preserved, with detailed displays about its occupants and volunteers happy to talk you round. Beyond the garden, 780 acres of parkland, woodland and hop fields carry the estate walks, and dogs on leads are welcome throughout. Visitors rate the cafe above the usual fare, praise the second-hand bookshop and say not to miss the ice house near the old castle. Two tips from regulars: parking must be booked in advance, even for members, so reserve a space before you set off, and the path down to the moat is steep, though a gentler route is signposted.
