Souter Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in the world to be purpose-built for electric light when it opened in 1871. Perched on the clifftops at Marsden between the Tyne and the Wear, it offers panoramic views along the dramatic coastline. The surrounding grasslands are home to wildflowers and nesting seabirds, and the Leas below provide excellent rock-pool exploring.
