St Paul's Monastery, Jarrow

St Paul's Monastery at Jarrow was one of early medieval Europe's important centres of learning, closely associated with the scholar Bede. The roofless remains visible today largely belong to the later medieval monastery, while part of the Anglo-Saxon church survives in the chancel of the neighbouring parish church. That distinction makes the information boards particularly useful for understanding the different phases of building. Visitors value being able to examine the low walls and marked outlines at their own pace, and often combine the ruins with the church when it is open. Finds and further interpretation are displayed at nearby Jarrow Hall, which is separately operated and charges admission. The monastery itself is free to visit. Expect grass, slopes and some paths, with limited disabled access, and check the church's own opening arrangements if its early features are part of your plan.
