Southwood Estate spreads across about a thousand acres of wooded valleys, wildflower meadows and craggy clifftops above Newgale beach, one of the longest in Wales, on the shore of St Bride's Bay. It was left to the National Trust in 2003 by Mrs Maurer, and Southwood Farm, with its range of Victorian buildings, now serves as the Trust's home farm for north Pembrokeshire. Fields are managed for farmland birds and scarce arable flowers, more than a kilometre of hedgerow has been reinstated, and ponies and cattle graze the clifftop around Maidenhall Point. Two waymarked Trust trails start from Maidenhall car park: the 1.3-mile wildlife walk through Trefrane and Folkeston farms and the 2.5-mile coast to coast circuit by Newgale beach. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a short lead because of livestock and ground-nesting birds. Visitors enjoy the spring bluebells and the sea views from the cliff paths. Maidenhall car park lies beside the Pembrokeshire Coast Path; the nearest toilets and cafes are at either end of the beach.
