St Davids Peninsula

St David's Peninsula is the rugged western edge of Pembrokeshire, where the National Trust cares for the coast around Britain's smallest city. North-west of Whitesands, St David's Head is dominated by the jagged tor of Carn Llidi, forged of volcanic rock almost 500 million years old, and carries Coetan Arthur, a Neolithic burial chamber of about 4,000 BC with a capstone almost 20ft wide, above an Iron Age coastal fort. South-west of the city the Treginnis headland, opposite Ramsey Island, holds the Iron Age fort of Castell Heinif and the ruins of a 19th-century copper mine, while Porthclais harbour has a small Trust car park, toilets and a kiosk in a former pump house. Two Trust routes cover both: the 3.75-mile St David's Head coastal walk from Whitesands car park and the 6-mile Treginnis walk from Porthclais. Dogs are welcome under close control, on leads where sheep and ponies graze. Reviewers single out the views to Ramsey Island.
