Standen was designed by Philip Webb, William Morris's closest friend, for the London solicitor James Beale and his wife Margaret, and finished in 1894 as a family home rather than a showpiece. It is one of the most complete Arts and Crafts houses anywhere, with original Morris & Co. wallpapers such as Trellis in the corridors and electric lighting from the start. The Beales lived here until 1972, when the house came to the National Trust. Outside, the hillside garden drops in terraces past a quarry garden and conservatory to views over the Medway valley to Ashdown Forest, with Adventure Corner for children. A signposted 6-mile circular walk from the car park reaches Kingscote station on the Bluebell Railway. Dogs are welcome on short leads outdoors. Reviewers love the textiles, tiles and lamps, the barn cafe and a fairly priced second-hand bookshop. Tips from visitors: parking is free but a couple of hundred yards uphill from reception, the garden has steep slopes and steps, and the nearest toilets to the garden and cafe are by the house.

Free entry for National Trust members. We are open 7 days a week and there's no need to book ahead. Dogs are welcome in the garden (please leave them outside when visiting the house). Please note a child ticket is aged under 17. Under 5's go free. Last entry to the house is 30 mins before closing time.
Last entry to the house is at 3:30pm. The house closes at 4pm. Last entry to Standen is 30 minutes before we close. Last orders in the cafe are at 4.30pm.

Tip: Such a gorgeous house to walk around, lots to look out, the grounds were beautiful, so much to walk around and see, with a bit of art work in the garden. Would go again.

6 miles (9.6km), moderate, about 3 hours, in 12 stages. Starts and ends at Standen car park, grid reference TQ391356, off West Hoathly Road, East Grinstead, RH19 4NE; the car park is not open outside Standen's opening hours. Mainly good paths and roads with muddy patches, several stiles, a very steep flight of steps at the station and some roadside walking, so a hi-vis jacket is advised. Most of the route uses public footpaths that are not under National Trust control. Toilets, cafe and shop are at Standen.
