Stott Park Bobbin Mill preserves the machinery and working spaces of a Lake District industry that supplied Lancashire's cotton mills. Its belt-driven lathes turn raw timber into wooden bobbins, with demonstrations showing the cutting, boring and shaping involved. The mill is presented as it was in the 1870s, and the exhibition explains the long hours, dust and dangerous conditions faced by its workforce, including children. Reviewers particularly praise the guides for making an unfamiliar trade easy to understand, while families enjoy seeing a bobbin made in front of them. The four acres of woodland provide space to explore during a booked visit. Arrange your tour before travelling, since opening is limited to selected dates and the grounds and facilities close with the mill. Dogs on short leads can enter the grounds, but cannot join the indoor tour.

All visits must be booked online. The calendar lists tours on 17 September at 10:30, 11:30, 13:30 and 14:30; later dates vary. Arrive at your booked time. The dated tour instructions take precedence over older walk-up wording on the access page.
Wheelchair access is to the ground floor only. Steep wooden stairs lead upstairs, with no lift; the site also has slopes, uneven ground, a pond and a stream.
Dogs at the location: Allowed with restrictions. Dogs on short leads are welcome in the grounds, but not on guided tours inside the mill.

Parking details
The upper car park is 200 metres from reception. The lower car park has seven spaces and three designated disabled spaces, about 50 metres from the entrance. EH members park free; follow signs for the appropriate parking area.
