The Old Mill stands right on Wembury Beach in South Devon, on a site where a mill was first recorded in 1283. The present building is over 150 years old; the mill was damaged by a great storm in November 1824 and came to the National Trust in 1939. Today it is the Old Mill Cafe, owned by the Trust but not managed by it, serving hot drinks, light meals and home-made cake within sight of the Great Mewstone, the island that JMW Turner sketched in 1813 and where the smuggler Samuel Wakeham made his home. The Trust rates the beach's rock pools among the best in the country. Dogs are not allowed on the beach from late spring to early autumn, and are welcome on it for the rest of the year. The Trust's 3-mile Wembury Beach to Heybrook Bay circular walk passes the cafe at its first stage. The cafe is reached by a stepped slope and eight steps, and the toilets are also up steps; members park free at the beach car park.
The road to Wembury Beach Car Park is expected to be closed from 13 October whilst Devon County Council conduct drainage works. It is expected to be closed for a week. We recommend visiting only on foot as vehicular access will not be possible.
