South Milton Sands is a long sweep of golden sand and rock pools near Thurlestone, edging a sheltered bay that looks out to the Thurlestone Rock archway. Behind the beach, a wet meadow draws migratory birds, and winter storms keep reshaping the dunes; the National Trust has tackled coastal change here for decades, from wooden piling sea defences to regenerating the dune system. The South West Coast Path runs east to Hope Cove and west to Thurlestone, on grass and mud tracks that are very steep in places. Reviewers love the clear, shallow water for swimming, paddling and paddleboarding, the rock pools and the food at the Beachhouse Cafe, a simple seafood and takeaway spot. One tip from regular visitors: the lanes in from South Milton are narrow with few passing places and the beach fills up on sunny bank holidays, so arrive early. Dogs are welcome all year under close control, including at the cafe.
