No admission charge. NT and Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust members enter on their card; others must obtain a free permit from the Wildlife Trust in advance.
No charge for anyone.
There is no car park. Both trusts direct visitors to limited parking along Whitcroft's Lane adjacent to the reserve, sat nav LE67 9QE; the Wildlife Trust asks drivers to be very careful not to block gates. Neither trust mentions any charge, so parking is recorded as free.
The map pin is the Wildlife Trust's what3words point for parking and the alternative entrance, ///dries.drainage.mixture (52.708266, -1.27777), which reverse-geocodes to Whitcroft's Lane, LE67 9QE. Google's reserve listing sits 130 metres east along the same lane; a reviewer notes the entrance gate is nearer the Copt Oak (B591) end of the lane than Google shows. Whitcroft's Lane leaves the B591 Copt Oak to Loughborough road 300 metres north of Copt Oak.
The National Trust's own pin (52.7014, -1.2726) is in the southern, Trust-owned part of the reserve near Priory Lane and is not an arrival point. Stoneywell's National Trust car park, also on Whitcroft's Lane, is for pre-booked Stoneywell visitors.
Non-members of the National Trust and the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust need a free permit before visiting: call 0116 262 9968 or email info@lrwt.org.uk and a permit valid to the end of the year is sent by email.
Ulverscroft Nature Reserve lies in the ancient Charnwood Forest near Copt Oak, Leicestershire, within the Ulverscroft Valley Site of Special Scientific Interest. The southern part was left to the National Trust by Charles Cliffe Jones, and the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust has managed the whole 59-hectare reserve since 1966. It runs from rocky hilltops at 250 metres down to valley marshes, taking in oak and beech woods with treecreepers and woodpeckers, bracken heath with bilberry, and Herbert's Meadows with fragrant and heath spotted orchids. Poultney Wood puts on a bluebell display each May. Entry is free, but non-members of either trust need a free permit from the Wildlife Trust before they come. Reviewers describe quiet, unkempt woods and pastures grazed by longhorn cattle, warn that paths are brambly, muddy and poorly signed, and say the entrance gate is near the Copt Oak end of Whitcroft's Lane. Tips from visitors: wear long trousers and boots. Dogs are welcome on leads. A public footpath links Poultney Wood to the Marshes.
The National Trust publishes no opening calendar; the Wildlife Trust lists the reserve as always open, best in spring.
