About
Whiteford and North Gower is the quiet side of the peninsula, which the Trust describes as a tranquil place for bird watching. Its saltmarsh, mudflats and tidal ditches form, with the dunes of Whiteford Burrows, an internationally important feeding ground for wading birds and wildfowl. At Cwm Ivy, farmland claimed in the 17th century went back to the tide when the sea wall breached in 2014, and two bird hides now overlook a salt marsh where little egrets, lapwings and kingfishers feed. The Bulwark, an Iron Age hill fort, crowns Llanmadoc Hill with views across Gower, and off Whiteford Point stands a cast-iron lighthouse of 1865, said to be the only wave-washed one of its kind in Britain. Dogs must be kept on a short lead around livestock. The Trust's North Gower butterfly walk is a boggy one-mile route from Welshmoor car park in search of marsh fritillaries. Reviewers praise the peace and the approach through the dunes to a very quiet beach. Parking is in the village, not the Trust's own, and there are no toilets.
