Appuldurcombe House is the surviving shell of an early 18th-century country house built for the Worsley family on the Isle of Wight. Once the island's grandest residence, its Baroque stonework still conveys the ambition of its owners, even where open windows now frame the surrounding countryside. Sir Richard Worsley added another chapter to its history through the notorious court case involving his wife Seymour, while Capability Brown reshaped the rolling grounds in the 1780s. Visitors enjoy tracing the architectural details and taking in views through the roofless rooms, often treating it as a quiet stop between other island attractions. Benches offer places to sit and consider the building's former scale. The car park is about 150 metres from the house, and much of the dirt path is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. Dogs on leads are welcome.
