Arnside and Silverdale

On the limestone shore of Morecambe Bay, the Trust's land at Arnside and Silverdale takes in Arnside Knott, Eaves Wood, Jack Scout and The Lots, a mix of limestone grassland, ancient woodland and wet meadow that the Trust describes as nationally important for wildflowers, butterflies, glow-worms and wood ants. The Knott's summit looks out to the Lake District and across the bay, and on its slopes stands the knotted larch nicknamed the giraffe tree, said to have been tied as saplings by a sailor and his bride around 1860. In Eaves Wood, limestone pavement and old yews lead up to the Pepperpot, the Queen Victoria Jubilee Monument built in 1887. The Trust's two circular trails, 1.7 miles on Arnside Knott and 2.17 miles through Eaves Wood, are moderate, with steep, loose or rocky stretches. Dogs are welcome under close control, with leads asked for on Arnside Knott and a short lead essential around sheep. Reviewers single out the views over the bay. The car parks at the Knott and Eaves Wood hold about 15 to 20 cars and there are no toilets.
