Avebury Manor and Garden

Avebury Manor, beside the great stone circle, is a Grade I listed house begun after William Dunch bought the estate in 1551. The Jenner family, owners from 1907, restored it and laid out the topiary and garden rooms, and archaeologist Alexander Keiller ran his excavations from the house in the 1930s; the National Trust acquired it in 1991. Flooding in January 2024 put over a metre of water through the ground floor, and after repairs it reopened in 2026 as 'Avebury as Home', tracing its residents from Tudor courtiers to servants and children: the Great Parlour and Great Chamber are refurbished, Keiller's drawing office is recreated from photographs, and a play den and dressing-up closet occupy the first floor. Visitors can still handle what they find, and reviewers praise the gardens. One tip from visitors: the pay and display car park is a short walk off, and members park free.
