Silbury Hill, Avebury

Silbury Hill rises above the Kennet valley as the largest artificial mound in Europe, probably completed around 2400 BC. Despite its scale and the effort involved in building it, its purpose remains uncertain, and it apparently contains no burial. The hill forms part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, but this visit focuses on the dedicated viewing area beside the mound. Information panels explain its construction and archaeological significance, helping put an apparently simple earthwork into context. Reviewers are struck by its size and the questions it leaves unanswered, and often combine the stop with other prehistoric monuments around Avebury. There is no public access onto the hill, to protect both the archaeology and the sensitive site. Use the separate Silbury parking area and allow for exposed weather. Toilets and refreshments are available in Avebury, rather than at the viewpoint.
