West Kennet Long Barrow is one of the largest and most accessible Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain, built around 3650 BC within what is now the Avebury World Heritage Site. The turf-covered mound runs for just over 100 metres, and at its eastern end five burial chambers open off a central passage behind a facade of huge sarsen stones. Excavations found the partial remains of at least 46 people, along with pottery, beads and a stone dagger, before the tomb was finally sealed with massive sarsen blocking stones. Visitors can walk into the passage and chambers, and from the top of the mound there are views of Silbury Hill and the East Kennet barrow. Reviewers praise those far-reaching views over the downs. The barrow is looked after by the National Trust for English Heritage. Park in the free lay-by on the A4 and follow the signed half-mile path uphill across farmland. Only assistance dogs are allowed.
