Banks East Turret - Hadrian's Wall

Banks East Turret preserves one of the observation towers that helped Roman soldiers watch the frontier along Hadrian's Wall. This western section originally used a turf wall, and the turret remained in use until late in the fourth century. Its low stone walls reveal the compact space occupied by the soldiers stationed here, making a useful contrast with the larger forts nearby. Reviewers especially appreciate the open views and the chance to stop beside a surviving piece of the frontier without a long approach. The site forms part of the official Birdoswald Roman Trail, so it can also be included in a longer walk. Pike Hill Signal Tower lies on the other side of the car park and represents an earlier frontier system. Bring refreshments, since there are no visitor facilities here beyond parking, and take care around road traffic and passing walkers.
