Willowford brings together a long stretch of Hadrian's Wall, two turrets and the remains of the Roman bridge that carried the frontier across the River Irthing. The river has shifted west over the centuries, leaving the substantial eastern bridge abutment standing away from the water. Its stonework and changes in construction help explain how Roman engineers adapted this crossing over time. Illustrated interpretation boards make the broken masonry easier to understand. Reviewers particularly enjoy the river setting and the walk beside the Wall, while repeatedly recommending sturdy footwear for mud and steep steps. English Heritage's suggested approach follows the Hadrian's Wall National Trail east from Birdoswald, using the modern footbridge to reach the remains. Parking is at Birdoswald Roman Fort and is separate from admission to this free site. The slopes and steps are unsuitable for wheelchairs, and farm livestock is likely to be present.
